The Matildas kicked off their First group stage match against opponents Italy at 6:30 pm IST today 😀 . From the very first minute, we got to see some extremely attack driven play from both the sides. Threatening shots started from minute 1 and lasted till forever!
Kerr came close in the 3rd minute but shot wide. A gasping moment came as Italy’s Bonansea scored in a one-on-one against Aussie keeper Williams but was declared OFFSIDE after much VAR’s discourse! The horror!?! There were some rumble in the jungle moments as Aussies invaded Italy’s box but a few misfires, and Italy capitalised on these to regain possession.
And then came Sara Gama’s nasty attack on Kerr inside the box, being ruled a penalty! Kerr took the shot, Giuliani jumped and saved it but Kerr kicked in the rebound!!! The drama!!!!
But, Gama was pretty amazing after this with some awesome saves including a very, very close call in the latter 15 minutes. It was the only goal in the first half.Impressive display by 19 year old Carpenter as she made amazing runs on the right flank, one of them in the 36th minute ending in a beautiful cross to Logarzo who’s headed effort was just saved by Giuliani.
On Italy’s side was Girelli, showing off some totally cool tackles, walks over the ball as tactically cleared the ball from among 2-3 opponents!! The beauty!!!! The last threat in the first half was Mauro’s shot in the 44th minute saved nicely by Giuliani!!! Over all, amazing display by both teams as they kept the ball almost 50 % each!
Onto the second half!
Bonansea equalized for the Italian side in the 56th minute with a spectacular run on the left flank finishing with a beautiful sliding shot as the Australian center-backs failed to predict her run!
De Vanna, national hero, walked on for her 4th World Cup as a substitute for Logarzo and was a beast throughout! Furious, fast, fueled!!!
The second half a bit too many offsides! 2 of Sabatino’s shots were ruled OFFSIDE, as were Girelli’s! Hero De Vanna to had her shot at the goal but headed it wide in the 81st minute. Second half saw Gama work a lot as she cleared away most of Aussies’ shots 😀 . Giacinti made an amazing run from Gama’s pass but yet again, Italy’s foe, OFFSIDE! Too many, really!!!
5 minutes were added and The Matildas were right at it. Gama denied Kerr in the first minute itself. Giuliani made 2 back to back saves in the 2nd minute of added time, punching away the ball skillfully on both occasions.
The edge-of-the-seat moment came right in the last minute of added time as Giacinti won a free kick for the Italians from the right corner. The ball was shot right in the box, and found Bonansea once again who headed it magically in and sealed the win!!!
Italy is BACK! Their first appearance in 20 years, but made it COUNT! Marvelous display against the Aussies who’ve been a part of the world cup for 6 grand times. But today was not their day! Today, it was Italy’s who proved they are certainly a European powerhouse and they will not be able easy team in this World Cup!!!
